So I have successfully survived the first week back to school (barely). I was pleasantly surprised by the number of kids in my class who already know how to utilize the Quizlet website. I don't know why I am surprised seeing they are the ones who always keep me informed of the latest and greatest technology and learning tools. I went to the Quizlet homepage and found it incredibly easy to set up activities. It is a studying tool for students and has a variety of practice and strategies for vocabulary memorization. There are also mobile apps available for iOS and Android. This is a free online tool with an option to upgrade for an additional fee. It appears that the free version has PLENTY to offer for teachers, parents and students. The Quizlet mission, as stated on their website is that "Every person on earth deserves access to free, powerful, and inspiring learning tools- and our mission is to build them."

Signing up to use this program was very simple (see below) and once you join, it is very easy to start creating your class study sets.

Next, you will make vocabulary lists with words and definition that will only have to be filled out once. These words will become part of a set that can be used for various study games. Sets can be created and updated as often as you'd like and there is no limit as to how many you want to make and organize.
I am still trying to figure out how I want to use it in my classroom. I currently teach ELA, Math and Science. My initial thought was that I would use it for science vocabulary for each unit beginning with Astronomy. With the new Common Core Math, however, it may also be a good opportunity to introduce some new vocabulary for that subject, as well.
If anyone has used Quizlet and/or has any ideas as to how you think I should use it, please share! I am excited to start creating my study sets and I am hopeful that it will be as easy as it looks. To be continued...

  1. I've never used Quizlet, but it seems to be very interesting. From what you've described, it seems like kids across the country from all walks of life have the access to continue their education online. technology is continuing to provide many new platforms for education and hopefully that will be evident with successful statistics.

  2. Thank you Melissa,
I have never used that app, but it seems interesting. I like your idea of using it for new vocabulary. I might use it to learn new vocabulary for myself :) I wonder if you can use it for introducing new facts in math classes?

  3. Having never used quizlet it does seem like a great educational tool for students. The question that first arose while reading your blog was if quizlet is only used for vocabulary purposes or can it be used in other fields? Even if it's just used for vocabulary reasons I could think of using it for learning another language such as EspaƱol or many others. Vocabulary is very important when studying a different language because you need to be able to know the meaning of the words your saying.
