So, I officially have my first Quizlet vocabulary set to use with my class. I decided to start with Science since there seems to be a lot of new vocabulary. We are currently working on the Astronomy Unit and I included words that we have already discussed in class along with words that will come up this week. Once the words were entered, I created my class and now I will be able to add as many study sets that I want to include throughout the year. What is great is that, I won't have to create new study sets year after year. They will already be here unless I delete them! The name of my class is : Mrs. Quinn's 5th Grade J-D. Feel free to go to quizlet.com and find my class study set!
a What the students can do to begin is, look at the list of vocabulary words. They can 'star' words they want to study together, they can listen to the word and the definition or I can record my own voice with the word, definition and any additional information I want to share with them. Once they have entered the set there are many different activities to choose from. I will share one of them with you now. The name of the game is Scatter. In this game, all of the words and definitions are scattered throughout the page. The students have to drag the words to their corresponding definitions while a timer is displayed in the corner of the page. The idea is to clear the page and the timer will stop. After completing multiple rounds, the hope is that it takes less and less time the more familiar the words become. I like this because although it is a competition... it is against yourself and not other kids. Try it!
Hi Melissa,
ReplyDeleteI like these techniques of helping the kids learn and testing them on what they learned. Especially the Scatter game because it is both testing the kids on what they know and also teaching them. And as you keep on playing the rounds the times in finishing them should get shorter and by that happening you can tell the kids are retaining the information.
Hi Melissa,
ReplyDeleteI liked that you chose science as your first Quizlet vocabulary. It seems that science along with social studies tend to be cast aside, and not focused on as much as English and Mathematics. The Astronomy Unit is a perfect place to start, I am sure several students are engaged in this topic.
I like how Quizlet allows you to keep the lists of vocabulary words year after year. It will certainly save time for the next time you begin a specific unit like Astronomy. I also like all of the features that Quizlet provides in addition to the flash cards. The audio definition is a perfect way to support students who prefer an auditory style of learning or reviewing.
The Scatter game sounds quite fun! As Rakeem had said, it is a great game for students to work on their memorization skills, as they learn each word and corresponding definition, their time will continually decrease. I particularly enjoy the fact that the students can see their times decrease as they get better and better to beat their previous times. This game makes "timed assignments" enjoyable. Thank you for sharing,
Alex
I like Quizlet from you description; I have never used it before. I like most that students get the chance of studying at their own paste and testing with their own selves witch is good. I like that you can use it for as many years as you wish. I wonder if teachers could cooperate with each others and share their lesson with other teachers, so instead of doing all units each teacher do a unit or two and then share the lessons together. I have done this before with power point, we " teachers" gathered and each one of us did power point presentations for two units and then we shared it, of course I did some modification on the slide but it was so much better then starting from scratch.
ReplyDeleteI also like how quizlet offers you a good learning tool for not just students but anyone who wants to just test their skills on varies things. I think it's cool that you incorporated quizlet into your classroom as well sounds fun. I haven't heard of quizlet until I started this course so I'll probably look at it a lot more now.
